Diane Long's journey in art began in her early childhood, inspired by her artistic mother, Connie Tomlinson Long. Her talent was first recognized in elementary school when her art teacher displayed her drawings of African animals in the school library. This early encouragement, combined with sketching alongside her mother at the kitchen table, set the foundation for her lifelong passion for art.
Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, Diane started formal art lessons at the age of 8 with Mrs. Gladys Morgan. Her high school years at Captain Shreve High School further nurtured her talent under the guidance of Mrs. Harris, who allowed her to explore art beyond the classroom.
Diane pursued a Fine Art degree at Centenary College, where she focused on oil painting, Intaglio, and relief printmaking, and deepened her understanding of Art History. A transformative summer tour of Europe after college enriched her appreciation of Renaissance art.
Her post-college career included painting a 5-story mural in Shreveport and creating large-scale theatrical backdrops for various theater productions. Diane also contributed to St. Marks Cathedral with three large paintings.
Diane has held numerous one-woman shows and participated in combined exhibitions. She opened her own art studio and attended professional workshops, studying pastel painting with Alan Flattman and Robert McKenley, and oil painting with Tom Lockhart. Her work has been exhibited and sold in galleries in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and juried into museum shows, including the Triennial Exhibit at Meadows Museum.
In 2017, Diane collaborated with historian Jack Sibley to create detailed hand-drawn maps of the Red River and Cane River regions, highlighting historical and commercial aspects of Northwest Louisiana.
In 2019, Diane attended an Atelier in Fort Worth, Texas, to refine her skills using techniques from the Renaissance. She returned in 2022 to further polish her craft, working from life and studying the Old Masters.
Diane Long continues to create and share her visual world through her art. She also offers commissioned artwork, including human, animal, and location portraits in both graphite and oil mediums.
“Centenary's Magale Library will host a reception for the opening of an exhibit of works by Centenary muse and alumna Constance Diane Long (’80.) The reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the library and is free and open to the public. Long’s exhibit will remain on display in Magale's lobby through October.”
“For the first time, a local historian, Jackson Sibley, presented Shreve Memorial Library - Broadmoor Branch's Genealogy Department with three new iconic maps.
These commemorative maps of Louisiana were created by Sibley and artist Diane Long, and all three maps illustrate the plantations along North Louisiana rivers: Cane River and the Red River.
The creation of all three hand-drawn maps notes in great detail the terrain, renowned plantation homes and other historical points of interest.”
“A highlight of this year’s tour was the dedication of a community mural. The mural, lovingly crafted by local artist Diane Long, graces the wall of the Shreve Memorial Library in Gilliam...”
